Needle Stick Hotline

The Branch has now established a 24 hour hotline for dentists and their staff who have suffered a needlestick or sharps injury.

Representations were made to the State government for such a function to be established through the Department of Human Services, however, they were unwilling to address this need. Their assistance has been provided, however, in the framing of a recorded message which is available on the following telephone number 24 hours per day. (03) 9826 3533

The recorded message encourages the injured party to advise their medical practitioner to contact a specialist facility with expertise in needlestick injuries in order to ensure that an appropriate response to a dental needlestick is provided. The Branch's Infection Control Committee has been concerned that there have been instances of medical practitioners either over-reacting or ignoring dental needlestick injuries, and not fully appreciating the nature of dental practice, and the risks involved. The referral to the expert advisors highlighted in the recorded message seeks to address this problem directly.

The ADAVB Needlestick Hotline is another valuable service to members and their staff.
