Standing Committees

Dr. N Hewson

To advise Council on:

  • Matters related to the Branch Rules and By-Laws; and
  • Matters referred to the Committee by Executive Committee and Council from time to time
Continuing Professional Development
Dr. K Homewood

The Committee’s objects are:

  • To encourage dentists to participate regularly in continuing professional development activities, thus ensuring Members’ compliance with the Continuing Professional Development Code of Practice of the Dental Practice Board of Victoria;
  • To provide regular, high quality and relevant continuing professional development activities, either in whole or in part, for the Members of the Branch, for allied dental personnel and other bodies as the Council may from time to time approve;
  • To maintain liaison with other continuing professional development organisations;
  • To oversee the Branch’s CPD Statement Service;
  • To monitor and report to Council on matters related to the Dental Practice Board of Victoria’s Continuing Professional Development Code of Practice;
  • To make recommendations to Council on any measures, which may in the opinion of the Professional Development Committee be calculated to improve continuing professional development activities available to the Members of the Branch;
  • To inform Council about any other matters relevant to continuing professional development as the Committee from time to time deems necessary;
  • To deal with any other matters, which may be referred to the Continuing Professional Development Committee by the Council;
  • To manage and administer the Continuing Professional Development Committee finances;
  • To comply with the Agreement between the Branch and the University of Melbourne (School of Dental Science) to enable the use of the University logo , if an agreement exists and is acceptable to and has been approved by the Branch and the University (School); and
  • To review and recommend books, journals, videos and other relevant information resources for the Library and the Members of the Branch.
Defence
Dr. I Cernavin

The Defence Committee's objects are:

(a) To support and protect the rightful interests of Members of the Branch;

(b) To co-operate and assist in the management of claims under any Indemnity Scheme, which for the time being provides professional risk cover for the Members of the Branch, and in so doing to function as independently as possible under the negotiated terms of such Indemnity Scheme:

(i) in the context of the above, and PROVIDED THAT the Members concerned are admissible appellants to the Indemnity Scheme;
(ii) to advise and defend or assist in advising and defending Members in any case arising from any claim or claims which may be made against them by reason of any alleged incompetence, neglect, unskilled treatment, omission or error of themselves, their assistants or employees whenever or wherever the same was or may have been committed or omitted and whether on their own part or on the part of any assistant or employee in or about the conduct or any business conducted by or on behalf of such Members in their professional capacity as dentists (including the administration of anaesthetics, both local and general) or by reason or any defect in machinery, plant, instruments or materials used by them in their said business or profession where claims or proceedings are made brought or threatened whether in their lifetime or after their death;
(iii) if possible to compromise or assist in compromising any such claims or proceedings;
(iv) if appropriate to appeal against and review any judgement finding or order of any Judge Court Justice Board or other tribunal or body
(v) to appear for and represent or to arrange for the representation of Members before any Court of Law, including any criminal or Coroner's Court, or before any other court tribunal or body in connection with any proceedings matters cases or inquiries arising directly or indirectly out of the practice of their profession by such Members; and
(vi) in the attainment of the above objects to do all such things and take all such steps as are incidental or conducive thereto

(c) To inform Council about any other matters relevant to defence and professional indemnity as the Committee from time to time deems necessary; and

(d) To deal with any other matters, which are referred to Defence Committee by the Council.

Dental Health Education
Dr. N Cochrane

The Committee’s objects are:

  • To disseminate to the public and the dental profession knowledge relating to the maintenance of dental health and the prevention of dental disease;
  • To make recommendations to the Council on any measures which may in the opinion of the Dental Health Education Committee be calculated to improve the standard of public dental health;
  • To inform Council about any other matters relevant to dental health as the Committee from time to time deems necessary;
  • To advise Council on fluoridation matters;
  • To develop and maintain a strategy to increase the numbers of Victorians gaining the benefits of water fluoridation;
  • To maintain liaison with other dental health education committees or groups; and
  • Deal with any other matters which are referred to the Dental Health Education Committee by the Council.
Disputes & Ethics
Dr. A Barnes

The Committee’s objects are:

  • To conduct investigations into disputes and ethical complaints in accordance with Rules 107 and 108 and By-Laws 2 and 3;
  • To make recommendations to Council regarding the implementation of By Laws 2 and 3; and
  • To deal with any matters which are referred to the Disputes and Ethics Committee by the Council.
Infection Control
Dr. J Cherry

To advise Council on:

  • All matters related to infectious diseases with dental implications,
  • All matters related to infection control issues;
  • Waste management;
  • Occupational health and safety; and
  • Matters referred to the Committee by Executive Committee and Council from time to time.
Professional Provident Fund Policy Advisory
Dr. T Cutler

The Committee’s objects are:

  • to represent the interests of the members of the PPF;
  • to advise Council on all matters related to the operation of the PPF;
  • to act on behalf of Council under a general delegation to undertake all necessary liaison with the Trustee, and all other service providers to the Fund, such delegation to involve the usual reporting to Council on a regular basis on action taken and issues requiring attention;
  • to provide a forum for the inter-relation of the members of the fund and the Trustee, and to facilitate the provision of information regarding the fund from one to the other and to enable Fund members through the PAC to participate in the ongoing management operation and administration of the Fund; and
  • to perform the functions prescribed by the relevant laws, which shall include advising and making recommendations to the Trustee on those matters required to be put before the PAC by the relevant laws or which the Trustee otherwise determines shall be referred to the PAC.  Such matters will include fund performance, structure, operations, compliance and communications and marketing to members and prospective members, along with any other matters affecting the efficient and effective operation of the Fund
Recent Graduate
Dr. A Wallace

The Committee’s objects are:

  • To advise Council on recent graduate matters;
  • To encourage participation by recent graduates in Branch activities;
  • To facilitate the assimilation of new graduates into the dental profession;
  • To assist recent graduates;
  • To facilitate contact between Council and undergraduates;
  • To monitor the ADAVB Employment Register;
  • To advise Council on matters referred to the Committee by Council and Executive Committee from time to time
Special Nominations
Dr. N Hewson (Acting Chair)

The Committee’s objects are:

  • To be responsible for making recommendations for Awards both internal and external to the Branch to persons considered to have made outstanding contributions to the Branch and/or the profession,
  • To prepare and maintain:
  • Records of citations for Branch Awards
  • A register of recipients of Branch Awards; and
  • A register of Branch Members who have received external Awards
Sports
Dr. L Wordsworth

The Committee’s object is to conduct sporting events on behalf of Council for Members of the Branch.

Third Party
Dr. E Magee

The Committee’s objects are:

  • To establish and maintain dialogue with Third Party organisations including the Transport Accident Commission, Victorian WorkCover Authority and Health Funds on matters of concern to the dental profession in the administration of relevant legislation and Third Party participation in dental treatment;
  • To liaise with Affiliated Societies as required in the development of agreed negotiating positions for discussion with Third Party organisations;
  • To liaise with the ADA Inc. and other Branches as required to ensure the consistency of ADA policies and statements on Third Party matters;
  • To advise Council on matters related to corporatisation of dental practice and associated industries;
  • To advise Council on matters related to Third Party participation in dental treatment; and
  • To advise Council on matters referred to the Committee by Council and Executive Committee from time to time.
