Council Members
Dr Anne Harrison BDSc (Hons) DCD (Melb) MRACDS (Endo)
President
Anne joined council in 2003. She is a former chair of the Recent Graduates Committee, vice-chair of Finance and Audit Committee and has served on the Infection Control Committee. Prior to completing her Doctoral studies in Endodontics at the Melbourne Dental School, she worked in general practice in Essendon. She now practices as an Endodontist in Moonee Ponds and Albury. Anne has volunteered on dental projects in Vietnam and East Timor.
Dr Anne Stewart BDS (Glas)
Vice President and Vice Chairman Finance and Audit Committee
Anne joined Council in 2005. She is a past Chair of the Mid-Western Group and is a member of the ANZSPD as well as the Victorian Women Dentists’ Association. Anne and her husband, Don, have a general practice in Ballarat.
Dr Chris Callahan BA, BDSc (Melb), FRACDS FADI
Honorary Secretary
Chris was elected to Branch Council in 2002 and went on to be President. He has served on numerous committees and is Chair of the Ad Hoc Dental General Anaesthetic committee and a member of the Constitution, Third Party and Ad Hoc Committee Review Committees. Chris is also a panelist for the Dental Practice Board of Victoria and incoming President of IADR Dental Materials Group - Victoria Branch. He is a Visiting Dentist at the Alfred Hospital. Chris is a general practitioner in Malvern.
Dr Stephen Cottrell BDSc (Melb), MSD (Indiana), FICD, FADI, Dip Am Board Periodontology
Immediate Past President
Stephen is well known as a lecturer in periodontics and has served the Australasian Osseointegration Society as Federal Secretary and as President of the Australian Society of Periodontology Victorian Branch. He joined Council in 1999, having been Chairman of the Graduate Education Committee and a member of the Infection Control Committee. Stephen was Vice Chairman of the Finance and Audit Committee and the Quality Assurance committee. He is Board certified with the American Board of Periodontology. He has a specialist practice in Melbourne and is a consultant to the Royal Melbourne Hospital; and is a part-time clinical demonstrator at The University of Melbourne.
Dr Mark Bowman BDSc (Melb) FADI
Executive Councillor and Federal Councillor
Mark joined Branch Council in 2004 and Federal Council in 2008. He was Vice Chairman of the Finance and Audit Committee 2005-06 and as President in 2007-08. Mark has been a member of Disputes and Ethics and several Ad Hoc committees, currently chair of Committee Review Committee. He has chaired Suburban Groups Q and J. He served as President of the Aust Soc of Perio. VB and is a member of the Federal Aust Soc Perio Inc. He has a general practice in Hawthorn East.
Dr Matthew Hopcraft BDSc (Melb), MDSc (Melb), BA
Executive Councillor
Matt joined the Council in 2005. He is a former a former member of the Branch’s Continuing Professional Development Committee. While undertaking doctoral studies, Matt is a lecturer at the Melbourne Dental School, The University of Melbourne. He is a former member of the Royal Australian Army Dental Corps and has worked in general practices and for a community health centre.
Dr Andrew J. Barnes BDSc (Melb)
A Councillor since 1996, Andrew has served as Honorary Treasurer, Vice President and was President in 2001-02. He has been a member and Chairman of the Legislation, Recent Graduates and Finance and Audit Committees. Andrew is currently Chairman of the Disputes and Ethics Committee. Andrew has also served on the Department of Human Services’ Dental Intern Working Party. He has a general practice in Mill Park.
Dr David J. Curnow BDSc (Melb)
Dr Curnow was elected to Branch Council in 1991. He has been the Suburban and Country Groups’ Coordinator and has served on various committees including the Legislation Committee, the Infection Control Committee, the Finance Committee chaired the Finance and Audit Committee and the Third Party He is a member of the Defence Committee and Guild Liaison Group. Federally, Dr Curnow is a member of the Schedule and Third Party Committee and was a member of the Therapeutic Instruments Materials and Equipment Sub-Committee for nine years. Dr Curnow was Executive Officer from 1999 to 2000 and Honorary Treasurer from 2000-2001. He was Vice President in 2001-2002 and was elected President of the ADAVB 12 months later.
Dr Bob Cvetkovic BDSc (Melb), LDS (Vic)
Bob joined Council in 2006, having been Secretary to Group E for four years and is currently Treasurer of that Group. Through his work in Donate-a-Day, he is known to many simply as Dr Bob. He is a general practitioner in Camberwell.
Dr Robert De Poi BDSc (Melb), MSD (Indiana) FRACDS
Dr De Poi joined Council in 2008. He is an Honorary Fellow at the University of Melbourne's Dental School and is a part-time clinical instructor in the Graduate Periodontics Program. Robert is a member of the Policy Advisory Committee of the Professional Provident Fund. He is also a member of a number of professional associations and societies. He has a periodontal practice in Moonee Ponds.
Dr Neil Hewson BSc (Hons) (Monash), BDSc (Melb), LDS (Vic), FADI, FICD, FPFA
Federal President
Neil started his service to the profession as a member of the Dental Health Education Committee in 1983, was Secretary of Group R in 1985 and elected to Council in 1987. He was President of the Branch in 1995/96 and subsequently the Honorary Secretary for 11 years, relinquishing the position in 2008. He has represented the Branch many times and has served on most Branch committees and chaired many. This contribution was recognised when he was elected an Honorary Life Member of the Branch in 2001.At the national level he has been a member and chairman of a number of Federal Committees and is currently the Federal President, having been a Federal Councillor since 1996. Neil is known for his dedication to the profession and has a general practice in Preston in partnership with his brother Ian.
Dr John Matthews BDSc (Melb), LDS (Vic), MDSc (Melb) FADI FICD
Immediate-Past Federal President
A member of Branch Council since 1992, John has held a number of offices including Executive Officer, Honorary Treasurer, Vice President and President. He has chaired numerous Branch committees and has represented the profession nationally on the NH and MRC (infection control), National Advisory Committee on Oral Health and in Victoria on the DPBV selection panel, Auditor-generals review of dental services and the DHS Dental Workforce Reference Group. His duties reflect his active involvement with the Branch and Federal body throughout much of his professional career. John is in general practice in Essendon.
Dr Greg Morris BDSc (Melb), LDS (Vic)
Greg joined the Branch Council in 2004 after having been involved with a number of committees. He was President in 2006-07. He was Chairman of the Dental Health Education Committee, Group E and served on the Graduate Education Committee. Greg has also been Secretary of the DHEC, GEC and Practice Management Committee. He was also a member of the Infection Control Committee. He has a general practice in Hawthorn.
Dr Mihiri Narayan BDSc (Hons) (Melb)
Dr Narayan joined Council in 2009 and is currently undertaking a Masters in Dental Research investigating oral health in nursing homes. Mihiri was Regional Group L’s secretary from 2005 – 2007 and has chaired the ADAVB Recent Graduates Committee. She has also taken part in a voluntary trip to India in 2007. Mihiri currently works in private practice in Pakenham.
Dr Vinitha Soosaipillai BDSc (Melb)
Dr Soosaipillai joined Council in 2008, Dr Soosaipillai is Senior Dentist at the Doutta Galla Community Health Service in Niddrie. She has been a member of ADAVB since 2001, the same year she became a committee member of the Victorian Women Dentists’ Association. Dr Soosaipillai is a demonstrator at the Dental School as well as being a dental examiner for the National Survey on Adult Oral Health.
Dr Jonathan Tversky BDS (Adel), MDSc (Melb) (Oral Med and Path), FRACDS FADI
Chairman Finance and Audit Committee
Jonathan joined the Council in 2004. He is a Senior Honorary Fellow – Oral Medicine at the Melbourne Dental School, The University of Melbourne and Coordinator of the Oral Mucosal Clinic, Skin and Cancer Foundation. He has served on the Executive Committee of the Oral Medicine Society of ANZ (Vic) going on to be Vice President and President. He has specialist oral medicine practices in Melbourne.
Dr Gary Yip BDSc (Melb), MSD (Indiana) in Periodontology, Cert. of Periodontology (Indiana)
Gary joined the Council in 2006. He is Secretary of Group E. A Senior Fellow at the Melbourne Dental School, The University of Melbourne, Gary is a former convenor of periodontics at the school. He also conducts clinical research in implantology for an international company. Gary’s practice is in Balwyn.
