INFECTION CONTROL WORKSHOPS FOR DENTAL ASSISTANTS
In 2009 the ADAVB delivered a series of Infection Control workshops that were specifically tailored to the needs of dental assistants. The workshops proved to be extremely popular and were all sold out successes.

There are four modules and you can choose to attend all of them or as individual modules.
Module 1 – Staff Health
Blood borne viruses and the healthcare worker
• Transmission modes in dentistry
• Risk factors for transmission
• Appropriate steps in blood and body fluid (BBF) exposure management
• Estimated risks of developing an infection post BBF exposure
Staff health programs
• Infections that pose a risk to dental staff
• Protection against development of infection
• Staff health programs that address staff protection against occupational infections
Module 2 – Infection Control
Transmission and prevention of infection
• The modes of transmission of infectious diseases
• The methods of infection transmission prevention
• Standard precautions and their application in dentistry
• Additional precautions and their application in the dental setting
Environmental infection control
• Environmental infection control issues in dentistry
• Use of barriers
• Cleaning and disinfection of the patient area
• Application of cleaning and disinfection of BBF spills
Module 3 - Sterilisation
Principles of steam sterilisation
• Properties of steam
• Application of steam as a sterilising agent
• Quality of steam
• AS4815 requirements for calibration of steam sterilisers
Monitoring and Validation
• Monitoring the sterilisation process as required by AS4815
• Validation of the sterilisation process as required by AS4815
• Quality requirements outlined in AS4815
Module 4 – Cleaning and Packing of Instruments
Cleaning dental and surgical instruments
• Care of dental instruments
• Cleaning processes of instruments both manual and mechanical
• Monitoring of the cleaning process
Principles of ultrasonic cleaning
• AS4815 requirements for testing ultrasonic cleaners
• Correct packing methods for instruments
• Monitoring of the packing and loading process for steam sterilisation
• Tracking systems for sterilised instruments
