27 February 2009 ADAVB response to Discussion Paper: National Standards in Dentistry Project

The ADAVB recognises that the National Dental Board has not yet been established, no specific brief on the development of professional standards has been devised by the State and Commonwealth Governments, and Health Ministers have not defined the scope of standards that their Governments will require to be addressed. Notwithstanding this, the preparation of early advice to the new Dental Board of Australia and beyond that body to the Ministerial Council and the Ministers themselves, is a worthy activity.

Dentists, dental therapists and dental hygienists rely on good radiographs for effective treatment of dental patients, and the safety of patients and practitioners is a primary concern of the ADAVB. We therefore support the continued operation of the Radiation Safety Act and Regulations.

The ADAVB welcomes further regulation of advertising of dental services, in addition to requirements specified in Section 64 of the Dental Practice Act 1999, by the establishment of requirements as to how after hours services are advertised.
